History of the Scheme

The Benllech and District Good Turn Scheme was set up in March 2001. From that very first “good turn”, the scheme has gone from strength to strength, and in 2026 it celebrates 25 years of helping our community.

Why the scheme began

Benllech is a popular place to retire to, with a stunning beach and a beautiful stretch of the Anglesey coast. Many people move here in later life, so they often don't have family nearby to support them. The local population is increasingly elderly.

As people get older, they may lose a husband, wife or partner who was the main driver in the household, or develop health problems, mobility difficulties or poor eyesight that mean they can no longer drive. Without a car, people can quickly become isolated and unable to reach basic services. That is why the Benllech and District Good Turn Scheme was set up.

“The past decade has seen the service flourish – a team of dedicated voluntary drivers can act as a lifeline to otherwise isolated people.”

Charity of the Year 2026

The glass Charity of the Year trophy from Medrwn Môn, engraved with the scheme's name

In our twenty-fifth year, Medrwn Môn, which supports voluntary and community groups across Anglesey, named the scheme its Charity of the Year 2026. We were presented with a personalised glass trophy, of which we are extremely proud.

Helping new schemes get started

Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, the scheme has become one of the best community transport schemes on Anglesey. We now give information and advice to new schemes starting up in the area.

We have seen the enormous difference schemes like ours make to people who would otherwise really struggle to get out of the house. If we can help another community group set up something similar, we are happy to help.
